Derek Dowson wasn't just an athlete—though he was exceptional at everything he tried. He was the starting outside linebacker who played with relentless heart. The "6th man" on varsity basketball known for his exceptional defense and the way he elevated his teammates. The anchor of the 4x400 relay who gave everything he had in the final stretch.
But ask anyone who knew Derek, and they'll tell you the stats don't capture who he really was.
Derek had a work ethic that inspired others to work harder. A kindness that made everyone feel seen. A sense of humor that could light up a room. Leadership that wasn't about being the loudest voice—it was about being the most reliable one.
On August 3, 2005, at just 16 years old, Derek's life was tragically cut short in a farming accident. Our family, our school, our community—we were shattered.
But Derek's impact didn't end that day.
THE #40 LEGACY
What began as a tribute to Derek in 2005 has become one of the most powerful traditions in Montana high school football. The jersey was brought back ten years ago after being retired for ten years following his passing. Each year since 2015, the #40 jersey at Great Falls High School is awarded to a player who embodies Derek's character: leadership, integrity, selflessness, and heart. There are now ten recipients carrying forward his legacy.
It's not about being the best player. It's about being the kind of person who makes everyone around them better—just like Derek did.
Each year since 2015, young men have carried Derek's number on their backs and his legacy in their hearts. And the tradition continues to inspire.

The story of Derek and the #40 legacy is being told in a professionally produced documentary, "I Am Number 40," premiering this fall. The film captures how one young man's character continues to inspire generations of athletes and honors the powerful tradition that keeps his legacy alive.
